Description
Join Dylan van Graan and the Hardware Centre Randburg team for an Introduction to the Art of Hand Sharpening!
In this training session, Dylan will introduce the trainee to:
- The theory behind the art of sharpening.
- Bevel Angles and their uses.
- The different Sharpening systems available (diamond, Japanese, oil and “scary sharp).
- Should I use jigs or go about Free-Hand?
- A live demonstration.
The training starts with a discussion of what is actually sharp and the factors that determine the level of sharpness attainable. What is sharp enough?
Topics around blade preparation and primary bevel angles will be discussed in detail with examples shown to demonstrate the theory and importance of careful preparation to ensure ongoing sharpening success. Discussions into bevel setup leads into blade geometry and a in depth discussion around bevel angles and their respective uses. All points will be demonstrated with examples of how bevel angles affect the use of each.
The most common sharpening systems will be covered in the equipment section with the advantages and disadvantages covered of each. Once the sharpening systems have been covered the training will move into topics covering the use of sharpening aids and jigs, whilst discussing the option of freehand sharpening as contrast. The advantages of both approaches will be covered in detail and where one or the other may be considered more appropriate.
A final demonstration of implementing both hand sharpening and the Veritas honing guide will
complete the day’s activities.
